Capturing Calmness- help for hyper dogs-dog training
Thіѕ video іѕ a tutorial οn hοw tο teach уουr puppy οr dog tο bе саƖm. Sοmе dogs need hеƖр tο learn hοw tο relax. Calmness ԁοеѕ nοt come naturally tο ѕοmе breeds .Bу reinforcing уουr dog fοr being саƖm, уουr dog wіƖƖ ѕtаrt tο сhοοѕе саƖmеr behaviors іn thе future аnԁ actually еnјοу being саƖm. Tips fοr teaching a Default Settle: Don’t drop treats іf thе dog looks up аt уουr hand аѕ уου mονе tο give thе dog thе treat, instead try again later. Don’t cue thе dog “down”. It works better іf thе dog figures іt out οn hіѕ οwn аnԁ CHOOSES tο lay down. Uѕе high value treats Ɩіkе real meat οr cheese fοr such a wonderful behavior.

Thank you so much for this excellent video. My Tansy, a Staffy X, has eyes on my hands for treats always. Now I know how to try and correct this.
Quick question, if the dog DOES get up, I say nothing right? I’m going to try this later with my pup.
Hi, thank you so much for your videos, they work wonders. I’ve been working with my bc and she is a lot calmer and well behaved. Could you give me some tips for stopping bicycle chasing? She gets way too exited to focus on treats or anything.
Thanks again!
Alexo
Thanks for this. Had a rescue dog come to stay with me yesterday, Lasted 13 months with first family, 4 days with the second. Working Bearded collie cross working border collies from farm dogs. He is a real live wire. Also thanks for the yawning, sighing, eye blinking and lip licking from the other vid.
@TheCelticlion Yes this really works! The change in my new best friend combining this with other rehabilitation work has been fantastic
Just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU for this…it’s made a huge difference for me and my dog! My two-year-old rescue border collie had no idea how to relax. We did great in our training classes but he didn’t understand the concept of “off time”. When we weren’t actively training he was always pestering me to do something which was really stressful on us both! Now, though, after using this technique he will lay calmly while I’m in the kitchen or watching TV. Thank you!
Thanks for the great tutorial!! I have a question… my lab puppy is extremely mouthy so even when she lays down near the chair she just starts chewing on the leg. I obviously don’t want to reinforce this behavior by giving her treats when she lays down. But even when I give her something appropriate to chew on she just goes after the leg. What should I do to get her to just lay down next to the chair without biting it? Thanks a lot!!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I will try this with my Shih tzu Chilli – She can’t stay calm when the cat comes close.
Very interesting and useful – thanks!
i rescued a malamute cross husky,, he is highly reactive, gets very aroused easily,he is sight and sound sensitive, so it took a while to train him to walk nicely. he is also an attention seeker, if i walk him on his own he is calm, but when anyone walks with me he pulls, lunges and barks at cars and other dogs, please help, and what do you think is going on in his head, hope you can help, many thanks for your great videos
my dog is normally really calm. but when she dose her thing… she gets really hyper and runs around the yard and one the road ( we dont have a fence) it takes almost 20 minutes to get her back inside. do you have any tips to prevent that?
Thank you for posting this. I have been trying this, and now see what I have been doing wrong. Clicking, and not waiting for him to be completely relaxed. I put to work your suggestions and am seeing immediate results. So nice to have a plan to work with his reactivity. C/T to you.
Another great exercise, you make it look so easy! I’ve been watching your videos regularly for the last month and i’m trying to take in all the advice you give.
We have a Spinone Italiano whos now 13 weeks old, I do a little training with him, would love to do more but i work too much. He comes to work and sits at my feet all day, which i will now reinforce after seeing this video. He gets pretty hyper around our 8 year old girl and the two cats, the cats especially!! Any tips?

I just realized that this is baby Splash… How cute! I love the video.
I love that you show an example in public at a pet food store at 5:55.
Great tips! I was surprised to recognize my dog’s behavior of pretending not to be thinking about the treat. I’ll have to be aware of that from now on.
you have a very complicated way of explaining something simple. good tips though.
O.M.G. the gorgeous Aussie Shepherd from the Christmas video! As a fluffy puppy, she’s just too cute- & a blue eye, my weakness, because I had a VERY hyper Aussie Shepherd mix with a beautiful blue eye. I didn’t know he was a working dog.
Now my daughter has an Aussie Cattle Dog/English Bulldog mix & he is out of control – the Eng. Bulldog strength & stubborness & the intelligence & constant activity of the Aussie. Maybe your video will help, i’ve posted it 2 her. Her Bossa Nova is a wonder..
I Have a problem with this, whenever my border collie is relaxed if he see’s me he instantly becomes hyper, so i dont really have a chance to reward him
Help anyone?

@Esther249 I disagree, I think she explains everything very, very well. Very thorough and easy for anyone to understand.
