I’ve been wondering, if you have an older dog that has certain habits fairly well ingrained, should we use the same techniques for training as we would a younger, more malleable dog? Should we just expect it to take longer? Or at there some tips and tricks that can help with training older dogs?

After teaching sit, this is the second thing I taught my puppy. And that if food falls on the ground she shouldn’t go eat it automatically… Cause i didn’t want her eat to anything bad for her health that I could drop on the floor by accident.

or you could just use target so they never have to be confused!
I hope this series will tell you how to teach your dog a default leave it with belongings. Many of my friend’s dogs will just pick up the persons belongings. Even if they do teach leave it, they will have to say “leave it” every time the dog picks up one of their things. Kikopup, or anyone else, do you know how to teach a default leave it for belongings?

I started doing this with Abbey! But it was before you put the tutorial up. Wow! I’m glad to know that I was actually training a positive “leave it” behaviour. I had really started training it because I wanted more focus on the agility course, but one day a dog reacted her from behind a gate and when I said “Abbey” she pulled away right away and came back to me. So WOW it helps more than one thing.
